The Physiotherapy and Functional Rehabilitation Center

ZoomVideo Physiotherapy and Functional Rehabilitation Center

Presentation

This Unit has been up and running since 1987, under the responsibility of specialist doctors (rheumatology, orthopaedics, cardiology, respirology, dietetics, etc…) assisted by a nurse for exercise tests, as well as by a team of physiotherapists specialised in sports injuries and in functional rehabilitation.
These various specialists participate in the treatment depending on the specific needs of the sportsperson.

Exercise tests

Assessment tests of the physical condition (endurance and resistance capacities) are undertaken, according to the direct determination of the Maximum Oxygen consumption (VO2 max) of the individual by continuously recording the respiratory parameters, during an exercise test of progressive intensity and carried out at the maximum physical capabilities of the sportsperson on the bicycle and on the treadmill. Simultaneously, permanent monitoring of the electrical activity of the heart (ECG) and the changes in blood pressure in all safety and under the supervision of a doctor assisted by a nurse-technician.
The assessment of the blood lactate concentration during the test may also be carried out by the nurse.

These tests are completed by measuring the body fat index (skinfold measurement). This value indicates the proportion of fat in relation to fat-free body weight of the individual, as well as spirometry (state of respiratory function).

These different tests enable the evaluation of endurance and resistance capacities. From the information obtained, the sportsperson, with the help of his/her trainer can thus adapt his/her training accordingly.
On the other hand, these tests will also enable certain diseases (cardiovascular, respiratory, etc…) to be detected, which are likely to lead to the contra-indication of the practising of some sports.

How should someone proceed ?

After a prior visit with his/her attending physician (appropriate forms available from the SMU), the person will contact the secretary’s office directly, by telephoning 022.346.99.60, or by emailing to make an appointment.

In the case where there is no attending physician, the subject should contact the Unit who will put him/her in contact with doctors who are likely to place them onto their patient list.

How much will it cost ?

If the attending physician thinks, on the basis of his/her examinations, that there is a reason for organising such a test, a large portion will be reimbursed by the Health Services.
In the case of an investigation of a preventative or prospective nature, no reimbursement will be paid by the Health Services and the cost of the test will be Fr. 300.-
If the analysis of the blood lactate concentration is requested, it will be invoiced separately at the price of Fr. 60.–
Finally, the results of the tests are compiled in a detailed report, accompanied by general information, and are sent to the patient with a copy for his/her trainer and to the attending physician.
