According to T.B. Brazelton, a newborn baby is unique with their own individual styles of responses. They are a social organism and predisposed to interaction with their parents from birth.
The Newborn Behavioural Observation (NBO) system by Kevin Nugent is based on more than 30 years of research and experience through clinical work on the Neonatal Behavioural Assessment Scale (NBAS) by T.B. Brazelton, an American paediatrician and author.
It has numerous benefits for newborns and babies up to two months old:
- Observe and assess the qualities and abilities of your baby
- Develop your understanding of their behaviour for better interaction
- Ease and strengthen the parent-baby bond
- Learn their specific needs
Details
The NBO or NBAS system consists of 18 neurobehavioural observations, allowing experts to assess your newborn baby’s responses, such as the quality of their sleep, the quality and length of their awake periods, their responsiveness to visual and auditory stimuli and their interest in interactive exchanges with adults.
These combined observations of your baby’s abilities will help you to become aware of their individuality and respond to their specific needs. This clinical observation is performed in your presence. Your partner is also welcome to attend.
